Author bio

Lynne Matson grew up in Georgia, in a house full of books and a backyard full of gnarly pines. Reading was woven into family life, and she has said the shelves at home held a little of everything, from science fiction and mysteries to fantasy, romance, and Dr. Seuss. That mix helps explain her own fiction, which likes danger, big feelings, and a little bit of the unreal.

She was a late-night reader long before she was a novelist.

Matson has remembered sneaking a Nancy Drew book under the covers with a flashlight because she had to know how it ended. Outside, there were apple-and-pumpkin trips to North Georgia in the fall and beach time in South Carolina in the summer. She still talks about loving the mountains and the ocean in equal measure, and that pull between beauty and risk shows up all through the Nil books.

College took her south to the University of Florida, where she met the man she would marry. After that came ordinary jobs, then law school, then a stretch of adult life as a lawyer. She has joked that being a lawyer is much more exciting on television than in real life. A few months after her fourth son was born, and after she was no longer practicing law, she started writing fiction for herself. One early manuscript was queried too soon and went nowhere, but it taught her how to keep going.

The book that changed everything arrived fast.

While on a trip to Hawaii with her husband, Matson drove through ancient lava fields on the Big Island and imagined a teenager waking up there alone, with no clue where she was. That image became the seed of Nil. She wrote the opening chunk quickly, and the story became her 2014 debut. The setup is simple and sharp: teens wake up on a mysterious island and have exactly 365 days to escape, or die.

That premise gave Matson plenty of room to do what she does best. Nil pairs survival suspense with romance through Charley and Thad. Nil Unlocked widens the lens through Rives and Skye, adding more of the island's rules, factions, and mysteries. Nil on Fire pushes the series into its endgame, while Nil Remembered, a short companion novella built around Scott Bracken's journal, lets readers look at Nil from another angle. Readers who click with her books usually come for the ticking clock and stay for the relationships, shifting loyalties, and the creepy question of what the island really wants.

Her debut also got a strong early response. Nil received a VOYA Perfect 10 and a starred review, and the series went on to find readers beyond its first release in the United States. But the appeal of Matson's work is easy to say in plainer terms too: she writes fast-moving stories with heart. Even when her characters are trapped in a brutal situation, they still sound like teens trying to figure out trust, love, fear, and who they want to be when the pressure is on.

Matson has said she loves what-if stories, twists on everyday life, imagined futures, and a healthy dose of romance. That tracks. Her books are built around ordinary young people dropped into impossible situations, then forced to make hard choices with time running out. The setting matters, the mystery matters, but the emotional core matters just as much.

Now she lives in Jacksonville, Florida, with her husband and their four sons. When she is not writing or reading, she has said she likes music, painting, walks, concerts, and time at the beach. She also has one wonderfully normal weakness for a writer of high-stakes survival fiction: cookies, especially Thin Mints.
