Series background & context

The Lucy Hall mysteries follow a different kind of sleuth. Lucy begins as a young woman in her twenties, still working out what she wants from life, when a family holiday to the Seychelles in Journey to Death draws her into the fallout from a secret in her father’s past.

What should have been a break in a tropical resort turns into a tangle of old grudges, hidden crimes and dangerous people who would rather the truth stayed buried. Lucy is not a police officer, so she relies on curiosity, quick thinking and sheer stubbornness rather than official authority.

By Girl in Danger Lucy has moved to Paris and is building a career as an investigative reporter. An anonymous source offers her a scoop, but after a disturbing meeting she returns home to find her flat ransacked and her visiting friend missing. In The Wrong Suspect she travels to Rome to trace a young man who has vanished, only to collide with a criminal network that has its own reasons for wanting him found.

Each book drops Lucy into a new city, blending fast paced mystery plotting with a strong sense of place. The stories explore how a determined newcomer navigates unfamiliar cultures, who she can trust when she has no back up, and how far she is prepared to go to help strangers caught in frightening situations.

Taken together, the trilogy charts Lucy’s growth from anxious traveller to more confident investigator, while still keeping the focus on twisty missing persons cases, family loyalties and the pleasures and perils of travel. The tone is tense but not bleak, making these books a good bridge between traditional crime fiction and full on thrillers.
