Series background & context

Lucas Page sits at the center of Robert Pobi's crime series, and he is not built like a standard action hero. Before the books begin, he worked for the FBI. By the time City of Windows opens, he is out of the agency, teaching, writing, and trying to keep his life smaller and quieter. That plan never lasts. Whenever a case looks mathematically impossible, the FBI comes back.

Lucas is an astrophysicist, a professor, and the kind of investigator who sees angles, trajectories, and patterns before other people have even figured out what the real question is. He also lives with catastrophic injuries from an earlier explosion, having lost an arm, a leg, and an eye. Pobi does not treat that as decoration. It shapes the way Lucas moves, the patience he has for nonsense, and the limits he has to work around every time he steps back into danger.

He is brilliant, blunt, and often a little prickly.

What makes the series work is the mix of brainy puzzle-solving and real physical pressure. In City of Windows, Lucas is pulled in after an FBI agent is killed by an almost impossible sniper shot during a brutal New York blizzard. Under Pressure widens the scale with a devastating explosion at the Guggenheim and a mountain of victims to sort through. Do No Harm turns toward the medical world, where suicides and freak accidents start to look a lot more deliberate than they first appear. Each book begins with chaos and then slowly reveals an underlying order that only Lucas can read.

The setting matters just as much as the crimes. These novels use New York as more than backdrop. Snow wipes away evidence. Crowds clog streets and bridges. Hospitals, museums, and law enforcement bureaucracies all become part of the problem. Pobi likes pressure-cooker conditions, bad weather, public spaces, and ticking clocks. The result is a series that feels part police procedural, part high-stakes thriller, with cases driven as much by logistics and physics as by interviews and hunches.

There is also a warmer layer underneath all that violence. Lucas has a wife, Erin, and a large family life that keeps tugging him away from the work he would rather leave behind. That domestic side gives the books some humor and relief, but it also raises the stakes fast. When Lucas gets involved, the danger rarely stays abstract for long. It moves toward the people he loves.

Expect impossible cases, a lead who thinks differently, and thrillers that stay grounded in character instead of swagger.
