Low Town Books in Order

Low Town is Daniel Polansky's fantasy-noir series about a man called the Warden and the brutal city that made him. It takes place in Rigus, the finest city of the Thirteen Lands, though its poorest district is a world of its own. Low Town is crowded with dealers, thieves, desperate laborers, corrupt guards, and people who know that official justice rarely reaches their streets.

The Warden fits right in, which is part of the problem. He is a former soldier and disgraced Black House intelligence agent who now deals drugs and protects his own small piece of the neighborhood. He is clever, volatile, deeply compromised, and not interested in being anyone's hero. Still, he has a habit of getting drawn into cases that other people would prefer to ignore.

In Low Town, the discovery of a murdered child pushes him back toward investigation and toward the old enemies he thought he had escaped. The mystery gives the series its hard-boiled engine, but the setting does just as much work. Magic exists here, yet it is folded into a grim everyday world of gang rivalry, political corruption, addiction, and the memory of war.

The following novels, Tomorrow, the Killing and She Who Waits, keep the Warden at the center while widening the stakes around him. A missing woman, powerful figures from the city above, a changing criminal underworld, and the Warden's own past all create new trouble. The books are connected closely enough that they are best read in publication order.

What makes the series distinctive is its mix of fantasy and crime fiction. The Warden investigates, bargains, threatens, and occasionally survives by being more ruthless than the people coming for him. But he is never separate from the damage around him. His history with the Black House, the city's secret police, means that every new conflict has a way of opening an old wound.

The main trilogy begins with Low Town. A Drink Before We Die is a shorter companion story set in the same world, focused on the Warden dealing with a threat to his territory.
