Everly is drawn in quickly, and Gunner is the kind of hero who makes that feel less like a fantasy and more like a trap with velvet walls.

Smith makes good use of contrast here. Everly believes in love in a more open, hopeful way than Gunner does. Gunner carries darkness into the relationship from the start, and he never really hides that he wants things on his terms. Then Hate Sober takes that setup and forces both characters to face the wreckage. Love is not enough on its own, and the second book is where the duet gets more emotional and reflective. Gunner's demons are no longer just part of his mystique. They become the thing the relationship has to either survive or be destroyed by. Everly changes too. She is not the same woman who rushed headlong into him, and that matters.

This is one of those series where the duet format really earns its keep. The first book delivers the high of obsession. The second book has to deal with the come-down, the damage, and the question of whether there is anything left once fantasy burns off. That gives the story more depth than a single-book version probably could have carried.

In tone, Love Me is dark contemporary romance with a lot of heat, angst, and emotional volatility. Gunner is not written to be universally lovable. He is proud, hard, and capable of making readers angry, which is part of the design. The books are interested in what happens when a heroine sees the darkness clearly and still has to decide what she will do with her own heart.

So what should you expect? A consuming duet, a difficult hero, and a romance that keeps asking whether love can survive when one person brings a storm everywhere he goes. It is messy, intense, and very aware that sometimes wanting someone is the start of the trouble, not the end of it.
