Series background & context

Love Between the Bases is Jennifer Bernard's baseball romance series, set around the Kilby Catfish, a Triple A team in small-town Texas. The setup gives her plenty to work with: players trying to keep careers alive, staff and locals who know every rumor, and a town where baseball is never just background noise. The result is sporty, sexy, and very tuned in to the way public image can complicate private feelings.

The books are connected, but they are not one long cliffhanger. Each story centers on a new couple, while the team and town keep everything tied together. That means readers get the fun of recurring faces without needing to memorize a giant mythology. The Catfish world is full of pitchers, catchers, owners, interns, mayors, data specialists, and assorted people who absolutely did not plan to fall for one another.

Bernard uses the baseball structure well. There is the pressure of performance, the weird intimacy of a long season, and the fact that everyone is watching everyone else. A player cannot really have a bad day in private. Neither can the woman trying to fix the team's reputation, win custody of a child, or keep a secret from the front office. The sport gives the romances motion, but the heart of the series is still character driven.

The tone is lighter than some of Bernard's suspense-heavy books, though not weightless. These stories like banter, chemistry, and big feelings, but they also leave room for messier issues like reputation, career setbacks, divorce, grief, and second chances. Getting Wound Up adds a crossover detour with Erin Nicholas, and later entries widen the world while keeping the Catfish at the center.

If you want contemporary romance with a playful hook and a clear shared setting, this is one of Bernard's easiest series to sink into. Start at All of Me if you want the full Kilby experience, then keep going and watch the team become its own little matchmaking machine.
