Chosen

by Ted Dekker

2007

Series background & context

The Lost Books series drops readers into the world of the Circle but shifts the camera to a younger cast. Aimed at teens yet enjoyed by many adults, these six novels (plus graphic adaptations) fill the fifteen‑year gap between Black and Red, showing what happens to Elyon’s people when Thomas Hunter is offstage.

Thirteen years after the forests were turned to desert and the disease of the Horde spread across the land, a new threat emerges. Thomas, now commander of the Forest Guard, chooses four unlikely young recruits—Johnis, Silvie, Billos, and Darsal—for a mission that quickly spirals into something far bigger. They learn that seven powerful Books of History have been scattered, and if the Dark One gathers them, both their world and ours could be lost.

In Chosen and Infidel, the foursome stumbles through their first quests, facing betrayal, the seductive pull of power, and the horror of Horde cities like Thrall. Renegade and Chaos push them deeper into enemy territory and even into our own reality, blurring the lines between worlds. The final pair, Lunatic and Elyon, co‑written with Kaci Hill, bring the arc to a climax that dovetails with the events of Red and White.

Tonally, the Lost Books read like high‑energy adventure—fast chapters, cliffhangers, and creatures ranging from Shataiki bats to the noble Roush. Underneath, Dekker and Hill are still pursuing familiar questions: Who are you really? How do you hold on to truth when everything around you screams the opposite? And what does loyalty cost when your friends make disastrous choices?

For readers touring the whole Dekkerverse, this page explains where the Lost Books fit in chronology, how the YA tone compares to the main Circle novels, and how the graphic novels condense the story. If you’re handing the series to a younger reader, you’ll also get a sense of age range and themes so you can decide whether to pair it with the original trilogy or treat it as a separate on‑ramp into Other Earth.
