Losing Gabriel Books in Order

The Losing Gabriel books belong to McDaniel's later work, and they feel a little wider in scope than her early illness novels. These stories are set in and around Windemere, Tennessee, where several teens are trying to leave the past behind, or at least survive it long enough to reach whatever comes next.

In Losing Gabriel, the cast matters as much as any single romance. Lani is carrying the memory of a cousin's death and wants to become a nurse. Dawson is angry, grieving, and stuck in a town he never wanted to move to. Sloan is talented, ambitious, and desperate to turn music into a way out. Their lives begin separately, then tangle in ways that make each choice feel heavier than it did before.

No one in this world gets a clean slate.

That is part of what makes the series interesting. McDaniel keeps one foot in romance, but she also leans into class differences, family stress, storm damage, anger, and the feeling that adulthood is arriving before anyone is ready. The books are still emotional, but they are less enclosed than a straight hospital story.

Somebody's Baby continues in the same story world and brings Sloan more sharply into focus. Success, family secrets, and the question of who belongs to whom add a fresh set of complications while keeping the same small-town emotional ties intact.

If you want a later McDaniel series with music, secrets, grief, and intertwined lives, Losing Gabriel is worth a look. It has her usual heart, but in a more contemporary, multi-character frame.
