Series background & context
Imagine being one of the last survivors of a murdered planet. That is the grim reality for the Garde, a group of nine alien children sent to Earth after their home world, Lorien, was turned to ash by the Mogadorians. These kids aren’t just refugees looking for a safe harbor; they are the backup plan. Along with their guardians, known as Cepans, they represent the only hope for their people’s future. They were smuggled away to grow up, develop their powers, and eventually take their home back.
But there is a catch to their exile, and it defines the tension of the entire saga.
To keep them safe while they are still young and vulnerable, a complex Loric charm was placed on them. It binds them together and strictly dictates the rules of engagement for their enemies. They can only be killed in numerical order. As long as they stay separated, the charm holds. The Mogadorians know this, and they have been hunting the children down, one by one, crossing names off a list.
By the time the story opens in I Am Number Four, the safety net is failing. Number One was found in Malaysia. Number Two was killed in England. Number Three was hunted down in Kenya.
Now, Number Four is next.
The series kicks off in rural Ohio, where Four has adopted the name John Smith. He is trying to live a low-profile life, dealing with standard high school headaches like bullies, homework, and crushes. However, his anonymity is on borrowed time. His "Legacies"—powerful abilities like telekinesis, fire resistance, and energy projection—are beginning to manifest. These powers are genetic gifts from the Loric elders, meant for war, not for showing off in the cafeteria or blending in with humans.
As the books progress, the scope widens significantly. The narrative shifts from a small-town mystery into a complex game of cat and mouse across the globe. The surviving Garde realize that hiding separately is a losing strategy. To survive the relentless Mogadorian pursuit, they have to break their own rules and find one another. When they reunite, the charm creates new dynamics, and their combined strength gives them a fighting chance against an enemy that has already destroyed one civilization.
What starts as a desperate run for survival transforms into a full-blown resistance movement. The battlefield moves from high school hallways to government black sites and major cities. Ultimately, the Lorien Legacies isn't just about saving the memory of a dead planet; it is about stopping the Mogadorians before Earth suffers the exact same fate.
