By the time the story opens in I Am Number Four, the safety net is failing. Number One was found in Malaysia. Number Two was killed in England. Number Three was hunted down in Kenya.

Now, Number Four is next.

The series kicks off in rural Ohio, where Four has adopted the name John Smith. He is trying to live a low-profile life, dealing with standard high school headaches like bullies, homework, and crushes. However, his anonymity is on borrowed time. His "Legacies"—powerful abilities like telekinesis, fire resistance, and energy projection—are beginning to manifest. As the books progress, the scope widens significantly. The narrative shifts from a small-town mystery into a complex game of cat and mouse across the globe.
