3

Alchemists of Loom

by Elise Kova

2017

On the conquered world of Loom, engineer turned thief Arianna has built a reputation dismantling the power of Dragons piece by piece. When she stumbles upon the wounded Dragon lord Cvareh, she sees a chance for profit and revenge, but their uneasy bargain drags them across a deadly, gear filled landscape toward rebellion.

Series background & context

The Loom Saga trades the sun baked empire of Air Awakens for a soot stained, gear cranked world where magic and machinery have been smashed together under Dragon rule. Loom, once home to the powerful Five Guilds, now lies under the heel of the Dragon King and his nobles from the floating sky islands of Nova.

On Loom itself, the Fenthri people live in a rigid guild system, each group specializing in a blend of alchemy, engineering, or other crafts. The Dragons who conquered them see the guilds as useful, but never equal. That tension runs through every chapter and every city street.

At the center is Arianna, an engineer turned infamous thief who has rebuilt herself as a weapon after losing everything to the Dragon invasion. Ari is pragmatic, prickly, and more comfortable with tools and explosives than with trust. Her talents lie in fusing organic and mechanical parts in ways that defy Dragon expectations, and she uses those skills to chip away at their control one job at a time.

Her life collides with Cvareh, a Dragon lord from one of the lesser houses of Nova, when she finds him wounded and on the run. Cvareh wants to unseat the Dragon King and believes the Alchemists on Loom hold the key. Ari sees only an enemy and, potentially, a very profitable corpse. Their uneasy bargain drags them across a landscape of underground trains, clockwork monsters, and guild politics that are as deadly as any blade.

Florence, a young gun mage who joins their journey, brings a different energy. Through her eyes you see the rebellion slowly knitting itself together, fueled by grit, desperation, and the kind of friendships that form when your life depends on the person at your back.

As the series moves into The Dragons of Nova and The Rebels of Gold, the point of view expands to include the cutthroat courts in the sky, brutal blood sports, and the Dragon families jockeying for power. Ari's vendetta, Cvareh's ambition, and Florence's determination all feed into a wider uprising that threatens to burn both Loom and Nova from the inside out.

The tone here is darker and grittier than some of Kova's other work. Expect brutal fights, moral gray areas, and a world where the cost of power is often measured in blood. At the same time, there is a strong thread of found family and reluctant, enemies to lovers romance woven through the gears.

For readers who like gaslamp or industrial fantasy, complex magic systems, and stories where rebellion is as much about identity as it is about politics, the Loom Saga offers a complete, three book arc that stands apart from but complements Kova's other universes.
