Locator Books in Order

The Locator books follow Walter Sherman, a semi retired Vietnam veteran with a rare gift. He can find people, lost objects, and the weak point in a story faster than most people can explain the problem. He works from St. John, and that island base gives the series its own flavor, part laid back Caribbean atmosphere, part waiting room for trouble.

Walter is not a polished private eye. He is older, stubborn, intuitive, and a little worn down, which is part of the appeal. He notices patterns, reads motives well, and trusts his instincts even when the trail looks impossible. Around him is a small circle of loyal friends and bar regulars, which gives the books a lived in feel before the action widens out.

Then the trouble gets big.

In The Knowland Retribution, Walter is hired to find a killer targeting people linked to a tainted meat scandal. The case starts with corporate greed and private grief, then opens into a chase that moves between St. John, Atlanta, New York, New Mexico, and the rural South. It is a thriller, but it is also a story about what happens when moneyed people decide some lives are acceptable losses.

The Lacey Confession keeps Walter at the center but shifts the mood toward conspiracy and international intrigue. A request to find a missing nephew turns into a hunt for a written confession connected to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. From there the story pulls in old secrets, professional killers, intelligence links, and a fast moving chase across Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States.

Across the two books, the series is less about solving tidy puzzles than about following pressure. Walter keeps stepping into cases where the missing person, hidden document, or hunted target sits at the center of much larger forces. Richard Greener likes powerful institutions, damaged people, and moral messes. He also likes throwing an aging tracker into the middle of them and letting experience do the heavy lifting.

That gives the Locator books a distinct tone. They are suspense novels with a strong sense of place, a slightly rough edge, and an older lead who feels very different from a standard action hero. The island setting matters because it gives Walter a home base and a rhythm, calm water, bar talk, local loyalties, then sudden motion when a case drags him elsewhere. The books later loosely inspired the television series The Finder, but on the page the series is darker and more grounded. If you want thrillers that mix pursuit, politics, business, and buried history, this is what Locator does well.
