Author bio
Liz Talley was born in Pennsylvania, but she grew up mostly in Louisiana, and Minden is the hometown she still claims. Books were there from the start. She has said she was the child who read Little Golden Books instead of napping, which feels like an early clue about how things were going to turn out. The South, family stories, and small-town personalities would all end up in her fiction later.
Before writing full time, Talley taught English. She came to fiction through reading, especially romance, and has described writing as something she more or less stumbled into because she loved stories so much. She has also joked that she used to get in trouble for telling stories as a kid, and now she gets paid for it. After years of learning the craft, she published her first novel, Vegas Two-step, in 2010.
She found a natural home in contemporary romance, especially the kind that makes room for heartbreak, humor, and a happy ending people actually have to earn.
Over the years, Talley has published with Harlequin, Hallmark Publishing, and Montlake. She was a finalist for both the Golden Heart and the RITA, and His Uptown Girl picked up an RT Reviewers' Choice Award. Those are solid career markers, but what readers tend to remember is the feeling of the books. She writes people who are funny, bruised, hopeful, stubborn, and often a little messier than they expected to be.
If you start with Charmingly Yours or Perfectly Charming, you get Talley at her warmest, writing women who are ready to step outside the life everyone expects them to live. Room to Breathe and The Wedding War push harder into family strain, old resentments, and the awkward work of growing up even when you are long past twenty. Adulting and Deconstructed show another side of her range, with more women's fiction, more reinvention, and a little more bite.
Her characters fall in love, sure, but they also deal with divorce, grief, career blowups, old secrets, and the long memory of home.
A lot of Talley's fiction is rooted in the South, in places like Morning Glory, Magnolia Bend, Bayou Bridge, Oak Stand, and New Orleans. She likes porches, family businesses, local gossip, and towns where everybody knows at least half your story. She also likes second chances, especially for women who are rebuilding after life has gone sideways. In 2023, she added screenwriting to the mix and co-wrote a short adaptation of The Wedding War.
These days Talley lives in North Louisiana with her childhood sweetheart and family. Away from the keyboard, she has talked about loving fishing, reading, yard work, shopping, and volunteer work, and she has a running joke about the perks of a writing life that lets her stay in pajamas if she wants. That down-to-earth tone is part of her appeal. Her books may deliver romance, but they also feel lived in.
