Author bio
Lindsay Marcott is a Manhattan native whose writing career has moved through magazines, novels, television, film, and teaching. She graduated from Smith College, then built a life that gave her plenty of material long before she started putting fictional people in danger.
Before she made her living from books, Marcott held a run of very different jobs. She waited tables, modeled for catalogs, worked as a fact-checker, cared for cats, and assisted a soap opera performer. She also wrote freelance pieces for magazines and newspapers.
Those experiences gave her a sharp eye for ambition, image, money, and the small humiliations people try to hide. They also explain why her stories often have a lively sense of workplace politics and social performance.
Her first book, The Sad Eyed Ladies, was a nonfiction look at the singles scene. Her first novel, Hide and Seek, shifted into suspense, following a frightening run of child disappearances in SoHo. It was an early sign of the things that would keep drawing her in: busy city settings, women under pressure, and the unsettling possibility that ordinary life is not as safe as it looks.
With Everything We Wanted, Marcott followed three college friends as they faced adulthood during the social changes of the 1960s. The book looks at friendship, work, love, and the gap between youthful plans and the real choices waiting after graduation. That interest in women trying to make room for themselves remains a thread in much of her fiction.
A move to Hollywood in 1985 opened another chapter. Marcott worked as a screenwriter, script doctor, and television producer, and wrote for the HBO series The Hitchhiker. She also worked on film projects and scripts for major studios. Hollywood was not just a new address. It became a useful pressure cooker for stories about fame, family, money, and carefully managed public images.
Writing as Lindsay Maracotta, she brought that world to the Lucy Freers mysteries, beginning with The Dead Hollywood Moms Society. Lucy is an animator, a mother, and an amateur detective navigating a Los Angeles full of celebrities, studio people, marriages in trouble, and suspicious deaths. The series later appeared in renamed editions as the Dead is the New Fabulous mysteries.
Marcott returned to Hollywood intrigue in The Producer's Daughter, then moved toward California-set gothic suspense with Mrs. Rochester's Ghost, a modern reworking of Jane Eyre. Her novels tend to pair secrets from the past with women who refuse to stop asking questions. She has lived on the California coast with her husband, a film producer, and their two cats, a setting that fits the fog, cliffs, old houses, and uneasy family histories of her later work.
