Lindsay Ellis Books in Order

Lindsay Ellis grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee, an only child in a place far from the media centers she would later work in. Like a lot of internet-era critics and writers, she found community online early, through fandom and message boards, and that mix of pop culture obsession and sharp analysis would shape almost everything she did next.

She studied film seriously. Ellis earned a BA in film studies from New York University in 2007, then went on to USC's School of Cinematic Arts, where she completed an MFA in film and television production with a focus on documentary and screenwriting. Before the novels, she was already making work of her own, including the documentary short The A-Word.

Then the internet made her famous in a very 21st-century way.

From 2008 to 2014 she was The Nostalgia Chick, making more than a hundred videos before moving into longer, more ambitious essays under her own name. Her videos on Disney, Transformers, and adaptation built a big audience, and her three-part The Hobbit Duology was a Hugo finalist. She also co-hosted PBS Digital Studios' It's Lit! with Princess Weekes, bringing the same curiosity to books that she brought to film.

Fiction was not a sudden detour. Ellis has said the seed of Axiom's End came from a grad school logline and a simple, strange question: what if a leak exposed the fact that first contact had already happened? That idea turned into her debut novel in 2020, an alternate-history science fiction story set in 2007. The book follows Cora Sabino, a young woman pulled into a government cover-up and an uneasy connection with an alien called Ampersand.

Readers stayed for the aliens, but a lot of them came back for Cora.

Truth of the Divine picks up with the world now forced to argue over alien personhood, public fear, and what moral responsibility even looks like when the beings involved are truly nonhuman. Apostles of Mercy pushes the series wider and darker, with militarization, old grudges, and the bond between Cora and Ampersand put under even more strain. Across the Noumena books, Ellis likes big science fiction ideas, but she keeps them tied to character, politics, media noise, and the messy business of translation, both literal and emotional.

That mix makes sense if you know where she came from. As a critic, Ellis spent years pulling apart stories to see how they worked, where they failed, and why audiences cared anyway. Her fiction carries some of that same energy: close attention to systems, sympathy for flawed people, and a real interest in how culture shapes what we think is normal.

She has also worked across a few different lanes at once, as a novelist, critic, video essayist, and host. Her debut novel became a New York Times bestseller, and she was shortlisted for the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. Those are big milestones, but they don't really capture her appeal. People tend to respond to the fact that she sounds like someone who has actually argued about stories for years, and enjoyed it.

Ellis lives in Long Beach, California, and continues to split her time between fiction and media commentary. Her path into novels was unusual, but it also feels perfectly logical: years of thinking hard about narrative, then building a world of her own.
