Author bio
Linda Reilly grew up in a quiet town in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, a setting that later found its way into her mysteries. She was a reader early on, with a taste for suspense and the kind of puzzle that makes a person keep turning pages to see how all the pieces fit.
Her route to fiction wasn't a straight line. Reilly earned a degree in criminal justice and considered law enforcement, but her working life led instead to real estate closings and title examination. That meant spending time with old records, property histories, missing links, and the practical mysteries tucked away in registries of deeds.
That work gave her a useful starting point for a fictional sleuth. In 1995, her short mystery “Out of Luck” was published in Woman's World, and she went on to publish more than forty short stories there, including some romances. Writing became more than a side interest.
Then came the novels.
Her first published novel, Some Enchanted Murder, introduces Apple Mariani, a paralegal and title searcher whose everyday expertise becomes central to a murder investigation. The book was a finalist for the 2014 Silver Falchion Award for best first novel in cozy, traditional, and historical mystery. Its premise also shows Reilly's fondness for connecting a present-day crime to details buried in the past.
Food and small-town life became an equally important part of her later books. The Deep Fried Mysteries follow Talia Marby, who works in a fish-and-chips restaurant in the Berkshires. In the Grilled Cheese Mysteries, Carly Hale returns to Vermont and opens a grilled cheese eatery, only to find that a close-knit town comes with plenty of motives for murder. Reilly's own comfort food is grilled cheese, so that series has a particularly natural fit.
Cats get their turn, too.
In the Cat Lady Mysteries, Lara Caphart returns to Whisker Jog, New Hampshire, and helps run a cat shelter with her Aunt Fran. The books mix shelter life, local secrets, and a blue-eyed Ragdoll named Blue who may be more than an ordinary cat. Reilly keeps the danger real but the atmosphere warm, with friendship, family friction, food, and pets always close at hand.
Reilly lives in southern New Hampshire with two feline assistants who reportedly enjoy walking across her laptop during editing. She belongs to Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, and the Cat Writers' Association. When she isn't writing, she enjoys browsing bookstores and libraries for her next read, or making another grilled cheese sandwich.
