Author bio
Lilian Harry was born Donna Thomson in Gosport, near Portsmouth Harbour, and grew up as the youngest of four children during the Blitz. Those early years stayed with her. Air-raid sirens, shelters, damaged streets, and the way ordinary people kept going would later give so much life to her wartime fiction.
She wanted to write from a very young age, but books were not her first job. As a young woman she worked in the Civil Service, then moved to Devon to be near her first husband, who was a sailor. They had a son and a daughter. After that marriage ended, she moved with her children to the Midlands and later married again.
Place matters in her work.
You can feel that in books like Goodbye Sweetheart, Corner House Girls, and A Girl Called Thursday, where wartime Portsmouth and London are busy, noisy, frightened, funny places full of ordinary people trying to get through the day. She writes the big events, evacuation, bombing, D-Day preparations, but she is just as interested in the quieter details, a crowded kitchen, a night shift, a hurried letter, a neighbour turning up at the door.
Readers who want something gentler often start with The Bells of Burracombe. That novel opened her long-running Burracombe Village series, set in a Devon village in the 1950s. From there, books such as A Stranger in Burracombe and Springtime in Burracombe build a whole world of schoolrooms, farms, church bells, old feuds, village gossip, and people learning how to live after the war.
She also wrote as Donna Baker and Nicola West, and the name Lilian Harry itself came from her grandparents' first names. Under those names she published shorter romances as well as broader historical sagas, including The Weaver's Daughter and Crystal. Across all those books, certain things keep returning: women under pressure, families with long memories, communities that can be both stifling and lifesaving, and love that never arrives in a neat or convenient form.
She has never written from a great distance.
Her own life fed the work. She spent twelve years in the Lake District before moving back to Devon, where later accounts place her in a village on the edge of Dartmoor. She has been described as a keen walker and bell-ringer who enjoys village life, and that local knowledge shows on the page. Even when her stories are dramatic, they stay close to weather, work, meals, fields, churchyards, and the routines that hold people together.
There is sadness in her story too. She lost her son Philip in 2008, and later biographical notes mention her daughter and grandchildren living nearby. That mix of loss, endurance, humour, and warmth helps explain why her novels connect with so many readers. She writes about people carrying on, and she plainly understands what carrying on costs.
That may be the real thread through all her books. Whether she is writing about a bombed street, a Devon village, a London tearoom, or an industrial family saga, she keeps bringing the focus back to people who are bruised but not beaten, and to the stubborn hope that life can still open up again.
