What ties the two novels together is less a single continuing cast than a shared world of inheritance, work, reputation, and longing. Harry is interested in women who are watched, judged, and limited, but who still look for openings. She also gives real weight to the places themselves, the mills, mines, villages, and weather, which helps the books feel connected even when the storylines differ.

The tone is more sweeping than cozy. These are historical sagas with romance in them, not romances lightly dressed as history. Family patterns, old griefs, and the tug of escape matter as much as love stories do.
