Series background & context
Light in the Empire is a Roman-era Christian historical series set during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian. The books are written as stand-alones, but they are tied together by recurring families, old friendships, and lives that keep crossing as the map widens. One story may begin in Judaea or Rome, the next in Germania, Britannia, North Africa, or Egypt, yet each still feels like part of the same world.
That world is full of pressure. Roman law, social rank, family duty, and public religion shape every choice. Ashby moves among officers, noblewomen, merchants, slaves, provincials, and early Christians who live with real danger if their faith is exposed. In Forgiven, a wounded Roman is hidden by a Jewish family in Galilee. In Blind Ambition, a tribune is rescued by the Christians he is supposed to treat as enemies.
Rome is the pressure cooker in every book.
The repeating draw of the series is not simply romance, though romance is always close by. These stories are about what happens when people divided by power, class, ethnicity, or belief are forced into close contact. The Legacy and Second Chances lean into family control, inheritance, marriage, and revenge. True Freedom, Hope Unchained, and Hope's Reward focus more directly on slavery, war, and the longing to live as something more than property. Later books like More Than Honor, What Matters Most, and Truth and Honor bring in murder, investigations, and Roman political ambition.
Forgiveness is not a soft idea here.
Ashby treats it as costly, risky, and often the hardest choice on the page. Her Christians are not sheltered saints, and her pagans are not cardboard villains. Many of the strongest arcs begin with fear, anger, or old hatred and then slowly shift through loyalty, mercy, and truth-telling. That gives the series a tone that is serious but readable, with suspense, emotional stakes, and a strong sense of place. Even when a book follows a couple toward love, friendship and family ties matter just as much as the romance.
If you want the first published book, start with Forgiven. If you want a later entry point, the series is flexible enough to let you jump in with a family thread or a premise that grabs you. Read one as a stand-alone, or follow the links between them and watch the Empire get bigger. Either way, expect stories where faith is tested in public, private, and very dangerous ways.
