Levi Stoltzfus Books in Order

Levi Stoltzfus is one of Brian Keene's best recurring characters, and the series built around him gives Keene a different rhythm than his apocalypse novels. Levi is an ex-Amish occult investigator, which is already a good setup before you even add the haunted woods, old legends, and rural Pennsylvania atmosphere surrounding him. He knows the supernatural is real. The hard part is figuring out which version of it he is dealing with this time.

He is not flashy. That helps.

The first key book is Dark Hollow, where strange music, mysterious fires, and disappearing women pull novelist Adam Senft into a nightmare in LeHorn's Hollow. Levi grows into the broader spine of the series from there, and what makes him compelling is that he is not just a monster hunter with a cool gimmick. His background matters. His faith matters. His doubts matter. Keene gets a lot of mileage out of a character who has real spiritual weight behind him but does not always get easy answers.

Ghost Walk keeps the Pennsylvania setting front and center, this time around a haunted attraction that opens the door to something much older and hungrier than a seasonal scare business was prepared for. A Gathering of Crows moves the action to Brinkley Springs and lets Levi face a more openly destructive, almost mythic threat. Then Last of the Albatwitches brings him back in two novellas, one about a deadly clearing in the woods and one about a local cryptid legend that may be less like folklore than people hoped.

Across all of these books, Keene keeps returning to a few things. One is place. Forests, small towns, ridgelines, rock outcroppings, and old local stories all matter. Another is the clash between modern life and older evil. Reality television crews, local attractions, and ordinary town politics keep crashing into forces that do not care about modern explanations. Levi stands in that gap. He is practical enough to investigate, spiritual enough to understand the stakes, and stubborn enough to keep going after saner people would leave.

The tone lands somewhere between occult detective fiction, rural folk horror, and creature feature. The violence can get nasty, but the books also make room for melancholy, especially in the way Levi carries his past. If you want Keene outside pure zombie mode, and you like your horror with woods, legend, and a haunted sense of place, Levi Stoltzfus is a very good place to spend some time.
