Series background & context

The Lessons In Love books are Andrea Penrose at her most traditional Regency. These are romances built less around spies and secret codes and more around emotional missteps, class barriers, and the very human problem of falling for the wrong person at exactly the wrong time.

The heroines are clever, capable women who find themselves in awkward positions. A runaway noblewoman becomes a governess in The Defiant Governess. In Second Chances, a woman takes a tutoring post while quietly pursuing justice of her own. The Storybook Hero pushes farther afield, sending its heroine into Russia and then into real danger, but it still keeps one foot planted in the same emotional soil: love, trust, pride, and the question of whether two people can meet each other honestly.

That is the heartbeat of the series.

These books are especially good if you like stories where the setting matters but never overwhelms the romance. The Regency world here is made up of country houses, drawing rooms, family obligations, and social rules that keep pressing in on the characters. A governess cannot say what a lady might say. A widow or dependent woman cannot move through the world with the freedom a man takes for granted. Penrose uses those limits well, because they create both tension and intimacy.

Another nice thing about Lessons In Love is that the books feel warm without becoming fluffy. The conflicts are serious enough to matter, but the tone stays inviting. There is wit, there is friction, and there is usually at least one person in the room who badly underestimates the heroine. That never lasts for long.

If you are coming to Andrea Penrose from her mysteries, this series shows where some of her later strengths began. You can already see her interest in smart women, hidden motives, and heroes who need to be knocked a little off balance before they see what is right in front of them. The scale is smaller than in her mystery series, but the pleasures are similar: sharp dialogue, strong character chemistry, and a sense that brains matter just as much as beauty.

These are also easy books to read out of sequence, though reading in order lets you see how her early style develops. If what you want is classic Regency romance with heart, humor, and a little extra backbone, Lessons In Love is a very comfortable place to begin.
