Author bio
Frank Leslie is the pen name western novelist Peter Brandvold uses for some of his hardest-riding frontier fiction. Brandvold was born in North Dakota and grew up in small towns there, in a part of the country where open land, livestock, and old stories were never very far away.
Westerns got to him early.
As a boy, he watched the television westerns that filled American screens in the 1960s and 1970s, and he read the paperback westerns he could find on spinner racks. One small family errand turned into a lifelong habit. When he was about eleven, a great-uncle sent him to buy a couple of western novels, and Brandvold came home with Fort Starvation by Frank Gruber and Hondo by Louis L'Amour. He has said that he never really stopped reading westerns after that.
He also grew up close to the physical world that later shows up so often in his books. He spent time riding horses, helping around farms and livestock, and roaming prairie country. That matters. His westerns tend to feel lived in, not just researched, because the dust, weather, distance, and animal life are part of the story instead of scenery pasted on afterward.
Brandvold later attended the University of North Dakota and the University of Arizona. For years he kept circling back to western storytelling, writing fiction, short pieces, and scripts before building a full-time body of work. Under his own name and under pen names, he has published well over seventy westerns, and by his own count more than a hundred action westerns in all.
The Frank Leslie name fits a certain side of that work especially well. These books are usually fast, blunt, and full of trouble. Readers often meet that side of him through The Lonely Breed, which introduces Yakima Henry, or through The Guns of Sapinero, which starts the Colter Farrow novels. A Bullet for Sartain launches Mike Sartain in the Revenger stories, and Ambush at Apache Pass shows how Brandvold can handle frontier warfare and survival as easily as revenge plots and outlaw trails.
His books do not stroll.
What readers tend to like is the momentum. Brandvold writes loners, drifters, wounded men, and people trying to carve out one decent corner of life before violence finds them again. He returns again and again to border country, mining camps, ranchland, small desert towns, and snowbound mountain country. Even when the pace is hot, there is usually something more going on underneath, questions of belonging, race, guilt, loyalty, or whether a person can ever really leave an old life behind.
The pen name itself was borrowed from the old frontier gunman Buckskin Frank Leslie, which tells you something about the mood he was after. Still, for all the blood and speed, the books are not empty exercises in gun smoke. They are usually about men who keep moving because stopping hurts, and who keep helping other people even when it would be smarter not to.
Brandvold has lived in many parts of the West over the years. More recently, he has lived in Colorado with his dog, still writing the kind of westerns he started loving as a kid on the northern plains.
