Lesley Horton Books in Order

Lesley Horton was born in 1939 in Farnhill, North Yorkshire, and spent most of her life in nearby Keighley, in the Bradford district of West Yorkshire. She went to Keighley Girls' Grammar School, and that part of the world stayed with her. When she began writing crime fiction, she wrote about the streets, pressures, and divided loyalties she knew best.

Before novels came along, Horton built a long career in education. She trained as a teacher at Redland College in Bristol, then continued studying through Bradford University and Manchester University. By the time she left teaching, she had a BSc in Applied Educational Studies and a master's degree in Special Educational Needs.

Most of her working life was spent in Bradford. She taught English up to A-level at an inner-city school with a mainly Asian pupil population, and earlier she ran an educational unit for pregnant schoolgirls and young mothers for twelve years. She also taught creative writing for the Workers' Educational Association, wrote as a village correspondent for local newspapers, and volunteered with Victim Support and Witness Support in the courts.

That experience mattered.

Horton took early retirement so she could write full-time, but writing was not a sudden reinvention. She had already spent years close to classrooms, local news, and the justice system, all of which fed naturally into crime fiction. She was also a founder member and chair of Airedale Writers' Circle, a sign of how seriously she had been working at the craft before publication.

Her first novel, Snares of Guilt, appeared in 2002 and introduced DI John Handford. Four more Bradford-set books followed, On Dangerous Ground, Devils In The Mirror, The Hollow Core, and Twisted Tracks. Readers who connect with Horton tend to like the same things: solid police work, a strong sense of place, and cases that grow out of real pressure inside families, schools, neighborhoods, and public institutions.

Bradford was never just scenery.

Across the Handford books, Horton wrote about racial tension, abuse, family silence, far-right politics, children at risk, and the ways authority can fail the people it is supposed to protect. A key thread is Handford's difficult partnership with Khalid Ali, which brings friction, mistrust, and eventually a hard-earned working respect. Even when the plots turn dark, the books keep their focus on ordinary people caught between fear, shame, loyalty, and duty.

She was active in the wider crime-writing world too. Horton served as chair of the Crime Writers' Association in 2008 and 2009, and she was commended for the Dagger in the Library in 2006. Those are plain signs that other writers and readers took her work seriously, even though her published list stayed quite compact.

Her old author profile gives a nice glimpse of the person behind the books: a West Yorkshire life with her husband, three grown-up children, four grandchildren, three cats, a dog, and a love of reading, theatre, and the piano. Horton died in November 2018, leaving five novels that still feel rooted in lived experience.
