Series background & context

The DI Andy Horton novels, also known as the Solent Murder Mysteries, follow a modern police detective working the harbours, marinas and islands around Portsmouth on England's south coast. Each book stands alone, but together they build a long running portrait of one cop, his city and the sea that surrounds them.

Andy Horton is a detective inspector in Portsmouth CID. He grew up in children's homes after his mother vanished and his stepfather drank himself to death, so he carries a deep sense of abandonment and anger. Now he lives alone on a small yacht in Southsea Marina, rides a Harley-Davidson and rarely wears a suit, which puts him slightly at odds with a fairly traditional police force.

Horton is instinctive and driven by a strong sense of justice, but he can also be prickly and impulsive. That combination brings him into conflict with bosses such as DCI Bliss and Superintendent Uckfield and makes office politics almost as hazardous as the investigations. At the same time he is trying, often awkwardly, to stay connected to his young daughter after the breakdown of his marriage.

Most of the cases begin with a body found somewhere along the coast, on a beach, in Langstone Harbour, on a yacht, or on one of the many small islands and inlets that dot the Solent. Rowson uses these locations for tightly plotted police procedurals that mix witness interviews, forensics, pathologist reports and legwork on the water. The tide, the weather and the hidden corners of ports and boatyards all play a practical role in how the crimes unfold.

Threaded through the murders is an ongoing mystery from Horton's own past. As the series progresses, he slowly uncovers clues about his mother's disappearance and the secrets certain powerful families would prefer to keep buried. That personal investigation colours how he sees each new victim, particularly anyone who has been overlooked or written off by society.

Across the books readers meet a core team of recurring characters, including loyal Sergeant Cantelli and various colleagues who either back Horton or try to rein him in. The tone stays grounded and procedural, but the stories are layered with family tensions, political pressure and the bleak humour that runs through long term police work. It is a series for readers who enjoy coastal settings, character development and complex, slow-tightening plots rather than forensic gore.
