Series background & context

Legacy Academy is the series that defines a lot of M Guida's early style. It begins with Raven, a girl who thinks she is living an ordinary life until one terrible day blows that apart. After a fight with her mother, she comes home to find her gone and learns a secret her family never shared: she is a dragon shifter.

From there, the world opens fast.

Legacy Academy is a supernatural school with strict rules, strong hierarchies, and a lot of pressure to stay in your lane. Date your own kind. Do not interact with the royal heirs. Stay away from the human world. Raven manages to break all of that almost immediately, which tells you a lot about the series. The rules are always important here, but they are usually most interesting when the main character is forced to break them.

Raven is not just adjusting to school. She is trying to find her kidnapped mother, understand why she is different from other dragons, and survive the attention of powerful supernatural forces. The academy brings together dragons, wolves, demons, Fae, and vampires, so even the classroom setting feels politically charged. There are factions, rivalries, prophecies, and the constant question of what Raven really is.

Lucien and the Defenders become a major part of that arc. So do the two princes circling Raven's life, the dark demons hunting her, and the larger prophecies that suggest her future may reshape the supernatural world. Across the four Raven books, the scale keeps expanding. What starts as a missing-mother mystery becomes a fight over power, identity, and survival.

That ongoing arc is what makes the series stick. Each school year gives Raven more responsibility, more emotional weight, and more reasons to distrust the neat version of the world she is being handed. By the later books, she is not simply learning to use magic. She is trying to hold people together while enemies scatter the Defenders and tear at everything she loves.

The tone is classic academy romance with a paranormal edge. There are mean girls, forbidden feelings, jealous rivals, family secrets, magical training, and a heroine who is far more important than she first appears. The books move quickly and are easy to binge because every ending pushes the next problem into view.

If you want the cleanest starting point for M Guida's supernatural fiction, this is it. Legacy Academy sets up the school world, the dragon lore, the key conflicts, and several characters who later branch into spin-offs and companion stories. It is the doorway into the larger Legacy universe, and it still reads like the place where many of Guida's favorite themes first locked into place.
