Series background & context
Before Legacy Academy does exactly what the title promises. It steps back before the main academy story and shows what some of the later players were carrying long before they ever reached school. That gives the series a slightly different feel. These books are still paranormal and emotional, but they lean more into origin story, trauma, and coming-of-age.
The first books center on Armond.
Armond's life is brutal from the start. Kidnapped by a dark demon when he is very young, raised in cruelty, and told he is a monster, he grows up without a clear understanding of what he is. Then his wings appear and the truth begins to crack open: he is a Golden Demon, tied to a family and destiny much larger than the life he has known. Suddenly he is being asked to leave behind the only people who ever felt like home because his own people need him.
That tension drives the series. Armond wants belonging, but every form of belonging seems to come with a cost. He has the band-of-brothers loyalty of the friends who kept him alive. He has a new blood family, including Lucien, pulling him toward another future. And he has Ebony, whose presence adds warmth and complication just when his life becomes even harder to navigate.
The books are not full romance in the same way some of Guida's other series are. The emotional pull is there, but the emphasis is on formation. These are stories about who the characters were before the bigger wars of Legacy Academy, what shaped them, and why they enter that main series carrying so much damage and loyalty.
Gunnar and Valentin widen that prequel space. Gunnar's story keeps the focus on prison, survival, and the struggle to hold onto love and brotherhood under Ryker's control. Valentin shifts the lens toward vampire society, family disgrace, and the need to prove that bloodline is not destiny. He wants into Red Rose Academy, but getting there means surviving trials and convincing the world he is not doomed to repeat his family's fall.
That makes Before Legacy Academy a useful bridge series. It adds depth to familiar names and helps the later books land harder because you understand what these characters have already lost. The settings are rougher, the tone is more bruised, and the stakes often feel deeply personal, even when larger supernatural politics are nearby.
If you are the kind of reader who always wants the backstory, this is the page to visit. Expect brotherhood, hidden heritage, prison, family damage, and the slow shaping of characters who will matter a great deal once the main Legacy story is underway.
