Leah Thomas Books in Order

Leah Thomas grew up in northern Michigan, in the sort of woods-and-dirt-road landscape that keeps echoing through her fiction. The off-the-grid feeling of that place, the isolation, the closeness to weather and woods, all of it shows up again later in her books. She studied English at Michigan State University and then went on to the Clarion Writers' Workshop, where she kept sharpening the speculative side of her work.

Before novels, she published short fiction in genre magazines and journals, including Asimov's and other speculative outlets. She was writing weird, emotional stories long before she had a shelf of books with her name on them. That early path makes sense in hindsight, because her novels still tend to begin with one odd idea and then use it to get at loneliness, friendship, fear, and the ways young people learn to name themselves.

Her debut, Because You'll Never Meet Me, arrived in 2015 and quickly stood out. Told through letters between Ollie, a boy isolated by a dangerous allergy to electricity, and Moritz, a German teen whose pacemaker means the two friends can never safely meet, the novel balances jokes, hurt, mystery, and real tenderness. It became a finalist for the William C. Morris YA Debut Award, which was an early sign that Thomas had found a lane that was very much her own.

It was a memorable start.

Thomas returned to those characters in a sequel that widened their world without losing the intimate, funny letter-writing voice that made the first book work. That balance, between a strange premise and very grounded emotion, is one of her recurring strengths. Readers who click with her fiction often point to the same things: unusual setups, sharp emotional turns, and teenagers who sound smart, awkward, wounded, and completely alive.

She did not stay in one lane. When Light Left Us uses an alien presence to tell a story about grief and a family trying to hold itself together after a father leaves. Wild and Crooked, later an Edgar Award finalist, moves into a Kentucky town shaped by an old murder and the labels handed down to the next generation. Violet Ghosts brings in ghosts, trauma, and a trans teen trying to make room for love and safety in the world of the living.

Then she took another turn.

In 2025, Thomas co-wrote The Blade that Binds Us, a dark queer fantasy inspired by Icelandic folklore. A village boy, a witch-boy, bone magic, a missing brother, it is a long way from the Michigan woods of her debut, but it still feels connected to the rest of her work. The odd setup is never just decoration. It is there to test loyalty, tenderness, identity, and the ways people change when they finally let themselves be known.

That is really the through line in Thomas's books. She writes about kids who feel set apart, by disability, grief, queerness, secrecy, violence, or bodies that do not behave the way the world expects. She has said Because You'll Never Meet Me grew partly out of homesickness while she was living abroad, partly out of the superhero stories and comics she loved as a kid, and partly out of a belief that distance matters less when people can share words, music, and stories. She has also linked the book to working with kids in schools and to growing up with social worker parents, which helps explain how alert she is to both teenage loneliness and the adults trying, and sometimes failing, to help.

More recent author bios place Thomas in San Diego, California, where she has also taught. Those same bios mention her joking about losing battles of wits with her students and spending free time on cosplay. That small picture feels right for both the author and the stories. Her books are thoughtful but not stiff, heartfelt without getting precious, and comfortable letting the weird sit right next to the sincere.
