Leah Giarratano Books in Order

Leah Giarratano is an Australian clinical psychologist and novelist whose fiction grew out of years spent working with trauma, criminal behaviour, and the ways people survive terrible things. That background gives her books a grounded, uneasy edge. Even when she moves into fantasy, the emotional stakes stay close to fear, damage, and recovery.

Before publishing fiction, Giarratano built a long career in psychology. She studied English and psychology at the University of Sydney, completed a Master's in Clinical Psychology there in 1994, and earned a Doctor of Clinical Psychology from the University of Wollongong in 2005. She has worked in psychiatric hospitals, with defence populations, and in correctional settings with offenders who have severe personality disorders.

That is not the usual route into crime writing.

It also explains why her novels feel so interested in motive. Giarratano has said her stories usually begin with character, and much of her fiction seems to ask what fear, cruelty, or neglect can do to a person over time. Her first big publishing break came when her opening Jill Jackson novels were acquired in 2006.

Those crime books arrived quickly. Vodka Doesn't Freeze was published in 2007, followed by Voodoo Doll, Black Ice, and Watch The World Burn. Readers who start there usually remember Jill Jackson first, a Sydney detective sergeant carrying deep childhood trauma. Giarratano never treats that pain as a decorative backstory. It shapes the cases Jill takes personally, the risks she runs, and the hard moral territory the series keeps returning to.

Each one shows a slightly different side of Giarratano's crime writing. Vodka Doesn't Freeze opens with the murders of child sex offenders. Voodoo Doll turns to violent home invasions and the hunt for a psychopath. Black Ice sends Jill undercover into Sydney's drug world, where family loyalty and police work crash together. Watch The World Burn widens the frame with arson, acid attacks, and a case that hits painfully close to home.

In 2012 Giarratano changed direction with The Telling, the opening book in the Disharmony trilogy, followed by The Laeduin and Immortal Combat in 2013. She had wanted to write young adult urban fantasy long before that, but years spent around real violence meant crime fiction came first. The Disharmony books still carry her interest in damaged people and dark motives, but they add prophecy, magic, sibling bonds, and a story that moves between Sydney, Romania, and a stranger hidden world.

Away from fiction, Giarratano has written clinical books and training programs for mental health professionals. She has been part of an award-winning inpatient PTSD treatment program and ran a nationally accredited CBT training program for medical practitioners for many years. In 2009 she also became the host of Beyond the Darklands, a television documentary series about serious offenders and the motives behind their crimes.

More recently, she has continued to provide training and limited clinical supervision for mental health professionals. Her bibliography is not huge, but it is strikingly consistent. Whether she is writing about detectives, damaged families, or teenagers pulled into a war between worlds, she keeps circling the same big question: what happens after fear gets inside a person, and what does it take to push back against it?
