Series background & context
The League of Ursus series imagines that teddy bears and other treasured toys have a secret life after the lights go out. Their purpose is serious: protect the children who love them from monsters. It is a middle-grade fantasy with toy-sized heroes, creepy threats, and plenty of heart.
Spark is a teddy bear, but she is also a young warrior. Her child is Loretta, an imaginative budding filmmaker who is starting to feel a little too grown up for an old stuffed animal. Spark still watches over her, trained by the older bear Sir Reginald and guided by the old rules of the League of Ursus.
Those rules are tested in Spark and the League of Ursus. A monster enters Loretta's home, children in the neighborhood begin disappearing, and Spark has to act before Loretta is taken too. She gathers an unlikely team that includes Sir Reginald, a nervous sock monkey named Zed, and Rana, an Amazon-princess doll. Together, they face dangers that the children around them cannot fully see.
The stories make the home and neighborhood feel larger than they look in daylight. Closets, bedrooms, toy boxes, and portals can become paths into a much stranger world. The toys have their own loyalties, fears, and disagreements, while the children have family problems and growing pains that matter just as much as the monster fights.
Being soft and cuddly doesn't stop Spark from carrying a sword.
In Spark and the Grand Sleuth, Spark is summoned by the Grand Sleuth, the high council of teddy bears. Her new mission involves finding the portals to the monsters' world and learning who can be trusted as the danger spreads. Loretta, Spark's friends, and even an unexpected ally all have a part to play as the stakes widen beyond one household.
These are spooky adventure books rather than full-on horror. There are scary creatures and real peril, but the series is grounded by teamwork, humor, and the idea that a child's favorite toy might be braver than anyone realizes. Start with Spark and the League of Ursus, then continue straight to Spark and the Grand Sleuth for the next chapter of Spark's story.
