Series background & context

The League of Guardians books take VA Dold's paranormal world in a darker direction. These stories still deliver romance first, but they trade some of the wolf-shifter family feel for vampire politics, protective missions, and witches caught in the middle of dangerous power struggles. If the Le Beau books are the big family home base, this series is what happens when the night shift takes over.

The basic setup is simple. Powerful vampires connected to the League are charged with protecting witches and facing threats that ordinary people would never see coming. That threat changes from book to book, but the pressure stays high. Ancient enemies, jealous rivals, hidden hunters, mob problems, and old grudges keep landing right on top of the love story.

Dangerous Destiny opens the line with Darius Drummond and Carolyn Soucek. Carolyn is a witch who can see the future, except when it comes to her own fate, which is not exactly comforting when witch hunters are after her. Darius is sent to protect her, and that blend of bodyguard tension and supernatural danger sets the tone for the rest of the series.

Then Etienne shifts the spotlight to vampire royalty. Etienne Delacour is not just another immortal hero, he is a king, and his personal life comes with political weight. Willa Witt, with her bright personality and no-nonsense streak, lands in the middle of that world. Their romance has a more glamorous edge, but the danger is just as personal, especially with Etienne's twin brother Ivan looming as a threat.

By the time you get to Fangs and Felons, the series is fully comfortable mixing romance with action. Xander Beck is on what should be a routine rescue mission, except the witch he is trying to save is on the run from the mob, law enforcement is involved, and trust is in short supply. The result feels a little faster and more chaotic, but it still fits the same world.

What links these books is not one single quest so much as a shared atmosphere. The heroes are dangerous men with responsibilities bigger than themselves. The heroines are not passive bystanders. The world around them is packed with paranormal history, uneasy alliances, and enemies who know how to exploit love as a weakness. Dold keeps the language straightforward, so even with kings, witches, and vampire feuds in play, the stories stay easy to follow.

If you want a useful shorthand, this is the branch of Dold's fiction for readers who like vampires with authority, witches with agency, and romance that comes wrapped in protection, pursuit, and just enough court intrigue. Start with Dangerous Destiny and read forward. The world makes more sense that way, and the emotional stakes land better once you see how the League operates.
