Author bio

Lauren Spieller writes contemporary young adult fiction about ambition, family friction, first love, and the uneasy pull between staying loyal to the people who made you and building a life of your own.

She grew up in Los Angeles, and that city clearly stayed with her. When she talked about She's the Worst, she described it as a love letter to the place she grew up, with all its sprawl, energy, and contradictions. That affection for setting carries into her fiction, where place is never just background.

Her path back to young adult books was personal. She has said that she loved reading for teens, drifted away from it during college and grad school, and then got pulled back in after her sisters handed her The Hunger Games. She tore through that series, moved on to writers like E. Lockhart, and eventually decided to try writing a YA novel herself.

Books and publishing grew together for her.

Before her novels reached readers, Spieller wrote multiple manuscripts and learned by doing. She has been open about the fact that her first book was practice, her second got closer, and things really clicked later. At the same time, she built a career on the publishing side through internships, scouting, editorial work, and eventually agenting. Today she works as a literary agent with Folio Literary Management, which gives her a daily view of stories from both sides of the desk.

Her debut novel, Your Destination Is on the Left, arrived in 2018. It follows Dessa Rhodes, a seventeen-year-old who lives in an RV caravan with her family and dreams of art school, a steadier future, and maybe something more with her best friend Cyrus. Readers who connect with Spieller tend to like that mix of yearning, movement, romance, and practical questions about what happens when your plans fall apart.

Place matters in her fiction.

That is just as true in She's the Worst, published in 2019. The book follows sisters April and Jenn over one long day in Los Angeles as they try to reconnect before college, secrets, and family strain pull them further apart. Spieller has said she wanted the novel to feel rooted in the west side of Los Angeles, and she has also spoken about drawing on her own high school years, especially the feeling of trying to keep everyone else okay when family life gets shaky.

Across both books, she returns to a few clear interests: ambitious girls, complicated parents, bruised but meaningful sibling or friendship bonds, and romance that matters because the emotional stakes matter first. Even when her plots involve motion, an RV caravan, a citywide day trip, the real story is usually about a young woman trying to decide who she is when nobody can decide that for her.

Outside her fiction, Spieller's public bios paint a pretty vivid picture. She is a California native, a literary agent, a dog person, and a latte person. She has also talked about loving cooking and interior design, and once shared that she used to be a modern dancer. It all fits with the work, grounded, energetic, and interested in the small details that make a life feel real.
