Author bio
Lauren Elliott writes the kind of mysteries she likes to read herself, ones filled with books, small towns, and just enough danger to make you turn the page. A USA Today bestselling cozy mystery author, she is best known for her Beyond the Page Bookstore Mysteries and her Crystals & CuriosiTEAS series about an intuitive tea shop owner on the California coast.
She has been writing, in one form or another, for as long as she can remember.
Growing up, she tore through the entire Nancy Drew collection before raiding her mother's shelves for authors like Agatha Christie, Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, Barbara Erskine, Lynn Kurland, and Michael Crichton. Those early reading marathons taught her how much fun it is to puzzle out clues alongside a determined amateur sleuth.
When it came time for college, journalism felt like the practical way to turn that love of words into a job. Elliott studied reporting and went on to work for a small publication, only to discover that straight news did not scratch the storytelling itch she carried around. At the same time, she was spending long hours in professional theater, learning how dialogue, pacing, and a live audience shape a story.
Eventually, fiction pushed its way to the center of her life.
The idea that became Murder by the Book grew out of her affection for used bookshops and classic whodunits. A friend's cozy little store, packed with rare editions and seasonal window displays, helped her imagine Addie Greyborne and the seaside town of Greyborne Harbor. When the first Beyond the Page novel sold, it opened the door to a long-running series that lets her explore grief, second chances, and the power of stories.
In books like Prologue to Murder, Murder in the First Edition, and A Margin for Murder, Elliott often builds her plots around missing manuscripts or coveted first editions. The puzzles are grounded in everyday life, from town festivals to family secrets, and her sleuths rely on curiosity, persistence, and the support of their friends more than on any forensics lab.
With Steeped in Secrets and the Crystals & CuriosiTEAS Mysteries, she leans into a softer, paranormal edge. Shay Myers, an intuitive gemologist who inherits a New Age tea and crystal shop, investigates deaths that brush up against Irish folklore, herbal magic, and the complicated bonds between sisters, exes, and neighbors. The result is a series that feels both slightly otherworldly and very down to earth.
Elliott brings some of her journalism training to every book, sketching out the who, what, where, when, why, and how on whiteboards and in stacks of notebooks before she starts drafting. She likes to give each suspect a believable motive and enough clues that readers can play along without feeling cheated at the end.
These days, she spends most of her time juggling deadlines, research, and new story ideas, often surrounded by piles of books and notes. Whether she is writing about a rare Dickens volume gone missing or a poisoned cup of tea, her goal is the same, to offer readers a brief escape, a satisfying mystery, and the comfort of knowing that by the final chapter, the right person will be unmasked.
