Author bio
Anna Elliott writes historical fiction and historical mysteries that lean on big research, quick pacing, and characters who have to make hard choices. She’s also one half of the father and daughter team behind the Sherlockian series co-written with Charles Veley. She lives in the Washington, DC area with her husband and their two daughters, and she’s been known to joke that she’s a favorite among mosquitoes.
Elliott grew up in Connecticut in a house where books were never in short supply. Both of her parents studied English literature, and she’s said that her childhood home was the kind of place where reading was simply part of daily life. She wrote stories early on, but it took time, and a few life turns, before she committed to finishing a novel.
In college, she fell for Celtic history and Arthurian legend, the sort of stories that feel ancient and strangely modern at the same time. That mix, gritty history on one side and myth on the other, became a foundation for the novels that first put her on many readers’ radar.
A dream during her first pregnancy helped kick her from “someday” into “start now.”
That nudge became the Twilight of Avalon trilogy, a reimagining of the Arthurian world that centers Queen Isolde in the uneasy years after Camelot’s fall. Across Twilight of Avalon, Dark Moon of Avalon, and Sunrise of Avalon, Elliott blends court politics, old wounds, and a little magic, while keeping the focus on the human costs of power, loyalty, and love.
She also has a long-running affection for Jane Austen’s world, and she’s explored it through diary-style continuations that give side characters room to breathe. Titles like Georgiana Darcy’s Diary, Pemberley to Waterloo, Kitty Bennet’s Diary, and Margaret Dashwood’s Diary lean into everyday details, sharp observations, and the way a “small” social moment can change a whole future. Several of these books were co-written with Laura Masselos.
If you like your history with a dose of danger, her Regency spy novels Susanna and the Spy and London Calling head straight for secrets, divided loyalties, and the risks women take when society expects them to stay quiet. More recently, she’s brought that same forward momentum to series mysteries set around wartime Britain, where the home front can be just as tense as the front lines.
On the mystery side, Elliott and her father, Charles Veley, rework the Holmes canon by giving Sherlock an unexpected partner: his long-lost American daughter, Lucy James. Their connected series includes full-length cases and shorter adventures, and it makes room for family dynamics, recurring allies, and the occasional trip far from Baker Street. They also spin off into WWI with stories like Guarded Ground and Hidden Harm, where younger members of the Baker Street circle step into the spotlight.
She’s the kind of writer who will happily admit to loving British television, unicorns, and rainbows.
Whether she’s writing myth-soaked Britain, Regency drawing rooms, or a foggy London street, Elliott tends to return to a few steady interests: smart, capable women, the pull of family, and the idea that the past is never really past. That’s a lot to juggle, along with real life, but she keeps turning it into stories readers can sink into.
