Author bio
Laura Lee Guhrke was born in Southern California, then moved with her family to Idaho when she was twelve. The change from Los Angeles to a small Idaho town was a big one, but Idaho became home, and its outdoor life has stayed part of her story.
Writing was not her first career plan. As a child, she wanted to be a marine biologist and study iguanas in the Galapagos Islands. Then came a high school biology class and a frog dissection. That was enough to send her looking for another future.
She did write stories, though. One English teacher dismissed them as too sentimental and suggested she did not have much of a future as a writer. Guhrke took the criticism personally, then turned it into a long-term promise to herself.
First, she went to college and earned a business degree. She spent seven years in the corporate world before deciding it was time to make good on that promise. In 1991, she completed her first novel. Prelude to Heaven was published in 1994, beginning a career built around historical settings, emotional second chances, and people who have to rethink what they want from love.
Her early standalone novels move through a wide range of eras and places. To Dream Again follows a London factory owner forced into partnership with an inventor. Conor's Way heads to post-Civil War Louisiana, where a determined farmer takes in an Irish prizefighter. The Charade brings espionage, danger, and a complicated bargain to colonial Boston.
That variety is part of the fun. Guhrke's books may feature dukes, titled families, and grand London houses, but her heroines are often working women, business owners, teachers, writers, or women trying to protect their own choices. They do not simply wait for rescue. They have plans, jobs, sharp opinions, and good reasons to distrust the men who disrupt their lives.
Conor's Way earned the RITA Award for Best Historical Romance in 1997. Later books found a strong home in linked historical romance series, including the workplace-minded women of the Girl Bachelors books, the American women navigating London society in An American Heiress in London, and the advice-column chaos of Dear Lady Truelove.
Her romances often begin with an obstacle that is hard to talk around. A broken engagement. A marriage made for money. A career threatened by gossip. A woman who wants independence and a man who thinks he knows what is best. The pleasure comes from watching both people do the work of seeing each other clearly.
Guhrke has said historical romance is her closest substitute for a time machine. It lets her visit earlier worlds while keeping the useful modern comforts close at hand.
She remains based in Eagle, Idaho, outside Boise. Her long-running connection to Idaho, along with interests such as skiing and fly-fishing, offers a nice contrast to the ballrooms, country estates, and busy streets of the historical worlds she writes about.
