Author bio
Laura Griffin writes romantic suspense with a reporter's eye for detail. Before she started publishing fiction, she spent years in journalism, first pulling long nights on the student paper at Vanderbilt University, then working as a newspaper reporter in the Chicago suburbs. Later she wrote travel articles in Southeast Asia before heading back to her native Texas.
That reporting habit never really left her.
Griffin has said that story ideas still begin with headlines and a simple question about what might be happening just off the edge of the news story. Research is a big part of how she works. She visits crime labs and law enforcement agencies, asks a lot of questions, and builds plots from real procedures, real jobs, and the kinds of mistakes or small clues that can change an investigation.
You can feel that background in her books. They are full of people who do practical work under pressure, detectives, forensic scientists, reporters, private investigators, security specialists, federal agents. The settings matter, too. Austin, the Texas coast, small beach towns, the Piney Woods, and rough West Texas country keep turning up in her fiction, and they never feel dropped in at random. Weather, distance, traffic, heat, and geography all have a way of becoming part of the suspense.
Many readers first meet her through the Tracers novels, which center on the Delphi Center, a forensic lab whose experts help police crack brutal cases. Books like Untraceable, Unspeakable, Touch of Red, and Stone Cold Heart mix murder investigations with romance, but the forensic angle gives the series its backbone.
She likes smart people doing difficult work.
Griffin has also built other corners of the same broad suspense world. The Texas Murder Files books move between Austin and the coastal town of Lost Beach. The Wolfe Security and Alpha Crew novels lean more heavily into protection work, tactical operations, and the people who run toward danger for a living. More recent standalones such as Last Seen Alone, Vanishing Hour, The Last Close Call, and Innocence Road show how comfortable she is outside a fixed series, too.
The industry noticed early. Griffin has won the RITA Award twice, for Whisper of Warning and Scorched, and she also received the Daphne du Maurier Award for Untraceable. Her books have appeared on major bestseller lists and been translated into fourteen languages. The more useful thing to know as a reader, though, is simpler. She writes brisk mysteries with capable women, competent investigators, and enough emotional pull to keep the pages moving.
Griffin lives in Austin, Texas, where she is at work on her next novel. Away from the keyboard, she has talked about loving travel, painting, photography, and a personal mission to hike all 63 U.S. national parks. That mix of curiosity and motion feels right for her books. Even at their darkest, they are written by someone who likes to go look closer.
