Author bio

Laura Drake grew up in the suburbs outside Detroit, and she was telling stories long before publishing entered the picture. As a kid, she entertained neighborhood children with ghost stories on the front porch. When she was not making things up, she was buried in books, the kind of reader who could get so lost in a story that real life became background noise.

In 1980, she and her sister packed everything they owned into their Pintos and moved to California without seeing it first. That move mattered. In California she met her husband, and through him, and through long motorcycle trips across the West, she found the landscapes and rhythms that would later shape so much of her fiction.

A lot of those miles turned into story fuel. Drake has said that a close call on one of those rides, when a dog ran into the road near Kernville, California, sparked the what-if that became Her Road Home. That origin fits her books well. They often begin with a sharp moment, then widen into stories about home, trust, and the hard work of starting over.

Before she wrote full time, she worked as a corporate CFO.

You can feel that practical side in her fiction. Her characters have jobs, money problems, family baggage, and responsibilities that do not disappear just because romance enters the room. Even in the cowboy books, the people feel lived in. They make mistakes, carry grief, and keep going anyway.

Her debut novel, The Sweet Spot, was published in 2013 and won the 2014 Romance Writers of America RITA Award for Best First Book. It also set the tone for a lot of what readers return to her for. Drake writes love stories, yes, but she is just as interested in recovery, forgiveness, second chances, and the messy emotional fallout that comes after life takes a bad turn.

Rodeo became another big part of her writing life.

After being introduced to rodeo on trips to Texas, she got hooked on professional bull riding and built the Sweet on a Cowboy series around that world. Books like The Sweet Spot, Nothing Sweeter, and Sweet on You mix romance with the real pressures of ranch work, injury, family strain, and the culture around the circuit. Later, the Chestnut Creek books, including The Last True Cowboy and Home at Chestnut Creek, kept that western feel while shifting into the life of a small New Mexico town.

She did not stay in one lane. Days Made of Glass moved into women's fiction with the story of a young woman trying to become the first female bullfighter while protecting her sister. The Road to Me and Amazing Gracie lean further into family history, reinvention, and emotional healing, while still keeping the warmth and plainspoken heart that run through her earlier work.

In 2014, she realized a lifelong dream of becoming a Texan.

These days, Drake writes across romance, women's fiction, and suspense. She is also a wife, grandmother, and motorcycle rider, which feels exactly right for an author whose books are so often about motion, risk, and finding home in unexpected places.
