Laura Ashwood writes sweet, wholesome romance and women’s fiction about people rebuilding their lives. Her stories make room for love, family, faith, grief, and the uneasy work of starting over.

Her published work reaches back to 2018, when she released the novella Second Chances. She soon began contributing to shared romance projects and writing stories in several different settings. That early work gave her room to try contemporary romance, historical westerns, holiday stories, and more emotional women’s fiction.

She likes a good premise with a human problem at its center.

In Royally Unexpected, a service-dog trainer takes a job caring for a prince’s pampered dog and finds herself caught up in a very inconvenient attraction. It is a lighter, playful romance, but the characters still have practical concerns, including work, public pressure, and the fear of making the wrong choice.

A Little Something Sweet brings the action back to a small town. Megan returns home to help her ill mother and restore a building for a bakery, only to discover that the contractor is Jake, the man who broke her heart years earlier. Their history, Jake’s young son, and a few determined family members turn the book into a warm second-chance story.

Then there is Summer at Bluefin Bay, which takes a deeper turn. After her husband dies, Abby learns that he had a secret life and leaves behind a grieving daughter who needs her. The story follows Abby as she leaves behind the expectations of her old life and tries to make a home in a coastal town. Sunset at Bluefin Bay continues Abby and Cami’s story as new family secrets bring old hurts to the surface.

Hope is the through line.

Ashwood also writes historical western romance. In A Groom for Ruby, a widowed woman and a man trying to leave his criminal past behind agree to a marriage of convenience in frontier Nebraska. A Groom for Violet follows a mail-order bride who is widowed almost immediately and finds an unexpected ally in her late husband’s brother. A Groom By Surprise uses a proxy-marriage setup to bring two guarded people together.

Her work has earned a USA Today bestseller designation, and she received the 2022 Faith, Hope, and Love Christian Writers Reader’s Choice Award. She has also been recognized by that organization again in 2025. Those milestones sit alongside a steady output of heartfelt, accessible stories rather than changing the kind of books she writes.

Ashwood lives in the Upper Midwest with her husband and a much-loved Chihuahua. Away from writing, she works as a paralegal, enjoys traveling and cooking, and spends time with her four grandchildren.

That balance shows up in her fiction. Her characters may face betrayal, loss, loneliness, or a hard choice, but they are usually surrounded by the chance to connect, forgive, and try again.
