Author bio

Joseph Lallo grew up in Bayonne, New Jersey, and for a long time writing was something he did almost in secret. He has said that storytelling was part of home life early on. During month-long family camping trips in Vermont, his mother would make up bedtime stories, sometimes pulling in ideas from the kids as she went. Later, video games and daydreaming did the rest.

One of those daydreams got very big.

The seed of what became The Book of Deacon started when he was young, then kept growing for years in spiral notebooks. Lallo has talked about carrying those notebooks around through school and college, writing scenes whenever he had the chance. By the time he reached an ending, the story had sprawled across a stack of handwritten pages. Friends pushed him to type it up, then pushed him again to try publishing it when he was ready to give up.

That mix of stubbornness and good advice changed his career.

Lallo studied at NJIT and earned a master's degree in computer engineering. For years, he worked in information technology and paid the bills the practical way, while writing in the background. He published The Book of Deacon in 2010 as an indie author, and the audience came gradually at first. He kept experimenting, kept revising, and kept releasing more work. By September 2014, the books had grown enough for him to leave his IT job and write full time.

A lot of readers meet him through The Book of Deacon, an epic fantasy that begins with Myranda Celeste, a war-weary young woman who stumbles into a much larger fight. Others come in through Bypass Gemini, which swaps swords for spacecraft and follows the wildly unlucky pilot Lex Alexander through a fast, funny run of trouble. Then there is Free-Wrench, a steampunk series about Amanita Graus, airships, engineering, and a toxic world above the fug. He has also written stranger side roads like Between, which drops an amnesiac man into a place where science barely works, and A Traitor in the Shadows, an urban fantasy about a photographer and his very unusual shadow.

His books jump between fantasy and science fiction, but they tend to share a few things. He likes capable people who are in over their heads. He likes found-family crews, practical problem solving, and worlds with their own rules and gadgets. Even when the stakes get large, there is often a thread of humor running through the story.

He also seems to enjoy building settings from the ground up, whether that means a continent shaped by a century of war, a galaxy full of racers and megacorps, or a skybound steampunk society held above poisonous haze. The technology and magic can get flashy, but the stories usually stay anchored to a handful of people trying to do the next difficult thing.

Outside the novels, Lallo has been active in the indie author world through podcasts and writing conversations with other authors. He has been involved with Six Figure Authors and previously co-hosted the Science Fiction and Fantasy Marketing Podcast. It fits the shape of his career. He learned by doing, kept adjusting, and then turned around to share what he had learned.

He has lived in New Jersey for most of his life, first in Bayonne and later in Colonia. These days, his catalog stretches across epic fantasy, space adventure, steampunk, urban fantasy, and short fiction collections. But the through-line is easy to spot. Joseph Lallo writes like someone who still enjoys the moment when a strange idea first turns into a story.
