Series background & context
The Last Ditch books are comic mysteries, but the comedy is not there to make the crimes weightless. It comes from voice, timing, and the chaos of people muddling through together. At the centre is Lexy Campbell, a Scottish marriage counsellor who came to California for love, got stranded by divorce, and ended up building a new life around the run-down Last Ditch Motel in the fictional town of Cuento.
It is a very odd little refuge.
Lexy never works alone for long. The series quickly becomes an ensemble, with motel regulars and neighbours turning into a kind of accidental family. Todd and Kathi are especially important to the books, and the group around them gives the series its real engine. These are not lone-detective puzzles. They are community mysteries, full of meals, arguments, worry, bad ideas, and the sort of loyalty that gets people into trouble as often as it gets them out.
The California setting matters just as much as the cast. Cuento is warm, eccentric, a little threadbare, and full of local pride. Lexy is a Scot abroad, so the books get a lot of fun from that outsider view, but they never reduce California to a punchline. The slough behind the motel, the houseboat, the small-town festivals, and the constant feeling that life is being improvised all give the series its shape.
Each book starts with a strong, often slightly absurd hook: a jailed client in Scot Free, a Halloween party corpse in Scot & Soda, a stolen statue in Scot on the Rocks, lockdown pressure in Scot Mist, or a wedding-day death in Scotzilla. The cases are real mysteries, but the pleasure is also in watching Lexy navigate friendships, romance, work, and the stubborn fact that she keeps attracting dead bodies. The books are fast, chatty, and warm without becoming fluffy.
Found family is the point.
If you are wondering what kind of tone to expect, think humorous crime with a decent amount of heart and a slightly frazzled narrator who notices everything. The jokes come thick and fast, but so do the feelings. Read them in order if you can, because the relationships deepen from book to book and the Last Ditch crew gradually becomes the reason the murders matter.
