Series background & context
Last Chance is probably the clearest picture of what Hope Ramsay does best. The series is set in a tiny South Carolina town that sits a little off the main road and a little outside ordinary logic, the kind of place where gossip travels fast, community memory is long, and lonely people rarely stay unnoticed for long. It is small-town romance with church suppers, beauty shop chatter, local festivals, family tangles, and the steady suspicion that fate is doing some quiet matchmaking in the background.
The first books revolve around the Rhodes family, and that gives the series a strong home base. Ruby Rhodes, who runs the Cut 'n' Curl beauty shop, acts as one of the town's key voices, and her children, Clay, Tulane, Rocky, and Stone, anchor the early stories. Around them are church ladies, neighbors, friends, and meddlers who always seem to know when a romance is brewing, or when it needs help.
Nobody in Last Chance gets to keep their business private for long.
Welcome to Last Chance opens with Jane arriving in town broke and hoping for a fresh start, only to collide with Clay Rhodes and the full force of local curiosity. Home At Last Chance brings Tulane back with Sarah, and Last Chance Beauty Queen sends Rocky home with British businessman Hugh. Stone's story stretches across the series, from Last Chance Bride to Last Chance Christmas, which gives the early books a little extra emotional continuity and shows how closely the town watches its own.
As the series grows, Ramsay widens the focus beyond the Rhodes family. She follows divorced Savannah White and Dash Randall in Last Chance Book Club, mechanic Molly Canaday in Last Chance Knit & Stitch, innkeeper Jenny Carpenter in Inn at Last Chance, high roller Mike Taggart in Last Chance Family, and fire chief Ross Gardiner in Last Chance Hero. Even the shorter stories, like Last Chance Summer and A Midnight Clear, feel firmly rooted in the same place, with the Watermelon Festival, Christmas bustle, and everyday town life doing a lot of the work.
What keeps the series moving is the idea of second chances. People come to Last Chance after betrayal, divorce, grief, scandal, or plain bad judgment. The town can be nosy and stubborn, but it is also generous. Ramsay lets her characters be wounded, proud, funny, awkward, and occasionally a mess, then gives them room to rebuild. That balance is a big part of the charm.
The tone is warm, slightly quirky, and very community-driven. There is humor in the gossip and the meddling, but there is also real feeling underneath it, especially when the books deal with grief, family obligation, and the risk of falling in love again. If you want an interconnected small-town series where the setting is as memorable as the couples, Last Chance is the place to begin.
