Author bio
Lara Temple was born in Oxford, England, and she has been making up stories for almost as long as she can remember. When she was three, she asked her mother to write down an adventure story she had invented. The urge to tell stories clearly arrived early.
Her route to historical romance took a few turns.
As a teenager, Temple found a worn copy of Georgette Heyer’s Faro’s Daughter in a secondhand bookshop. She spent hours reading it, then came back into the daylight completely taken with Regency romance. The mix of sharp conversation, social rules, danger, and happy endings stayed with her.
Writing was not immediately her day job. Temple spent roughly three decades working in finance and high tech before returning to the kind of stories she had loved as a reader. That life experience shows up in the practical streak of many of her characters. Her heroines often have jobs, responsibilities, or problems that cannot be wished away, while her heroes have to learn that control is not the same thing as happiness.
Her first Harlequin Historical novel, Lord Crayle’s Secret World, introduced a Regency world of spies, secrets, and a highwaywoman who is more capable than the earl who first underestimates her. The Reluctant Viscount followed with a former wallflower, a sham engagement, and danger from the past. These early books established her interest in romance with a little mystery running alongside it.
Then came the dukes, earls, and inconvenient engagements.
In The Duke’s Unexpected Bride, a serious duke finds his careful plans disrupted by Sophie Trevelyan, an artist with a lively manner and an overweight pug. The Wild Lords and Innocent Ladies books follow three friends marked by the Napoleonic Wars, while The Sinful Sinclairs moves between England, Egypt, and Venice as a family confronts old scandals and new attachments. Readers who enjoy witty exchanges, capable women, and emotionally guarded men will find plenty to work with.
Temple also likes a setting that gives the romance room to breathe. Egypt matters in The Return of the Disappearing Duke and The Lord’s Inconvenient Vow. Venice becomes a place for secrets and espionage in The Wrong Way to Catch a Rake. Scotland brings a castle, a young child, and a second chance at love to Unlaced by the Highland Duke.
The love stories tend to be sensual, but the emotional question is usually simple: can two people stop performing the role expected of them and build a life that actually fits? The answer takes some work, usually with an argument or two along the way.
Temple lives with her husband, two children, and a very fluffy dog. She has written from the kitchen table, looking out at the garden while she works out how to get her characters to their happy endings.
