The Langham and Dupré mysteries are Eric Brown's affectionate take on the classic English whodunnit. The books are set in the mid-1950s, when rationing and wartime memories are still close, but television, film culture, and postwar change are beginning to reshape everyday life.

Readers get closed groups of suspects, suspicious accidents, false leads, old letters, locked rooms, and the pleasure of watching Donald sort through a story that does not add up.

Start with Murder By the Book, which introduces Donald, Maria, literary agent Charles Elder, and the London world of crime writers and publishing. Murder at the Chase moves the action to rural Suffolk and leans into the country-house atmosphere. From there, the books can be read in order as Donald and Maria's relationship develops, though individual cases are generally complete on their own.

The series is ideal for readers who like postwar settings, smart but low-key detectives, and mysteries built from motive rather than violence for its own sake. Brown clearly enjoys the mechanics of a good plot, but he also gives his investigators a life beyond the next clue.
