Series background & context

The title tells you almost everything you need to know about Ladies Always Shoot First. These are brisk Regency romances built around heroines who are quicker, bolder, and far less helpless than society expects.

Each story is short, but the stakes arrive fast. In Captured by a Duke, Lady Annabel is kidnapped on the eve of her wedding and responds by shooting her abductor before making her escape. In To Save a Lord, Kitty Brightly's reputation is already in tatters when one bold choice puts both her hopes and her heart at risk. One Shot for a Gentleman turns heartbreak into comic disaster when two women discover they have both been courted by the same man, and Anything for a Lord shows how a hasty marriage can look very different once the mystery inside it starts to show.

What ties the series together is energy. These are not long, slow social novels. They are half hour style reads with kidnappings, compromised reputations, dawn confrontations, rescues, and quick emotional reversals. The heroines still care about love and social standing, but they are not waiting around to be managed by fathers, guardians, or eligible gentlemen.

That makes the tone fun even when the premise edges toward danger. The books know the rules of Regency romance, then give the women enough nerve, and occasionally enough weaponry, to push back.
