Series background & context
Laddertop is a science-fiction graphic novel series about children given an important place in a world transformed by alien technology. Orson Scott Card and Emily Janice Card follow best friends Robbi and Azure as they become involved with the Academy that trains young workers for the Laddertop space stations. The opportunity promises an unusual future, but the girls soon have reasons to question what they have been told about it.
The setting begins with the Givers, aliens who arrived on Earth and supplied technology that changed human life. Their gifts include stations that provide power, connected to the planet by enormous ladders. Those structures are valuable enough to make their continued operation a major concern. Yet their alien construction creates a particular problem: the spaces requiring maintenance are too small for ordinary adult crews. Skilled children are needed to do the work.
Being chosen means taking on more than a school assignment.
Robbi and Azure respond differently to the prospect. Azure is ambitious and eager to be selected, while Robbi is more hesitant and has worries about the family she would leave behind. Their friendship gives the adventure a personal foundation before the mysteries grow larger. Moving toward the same program doesn't mean they bring the same hopes or fears with them. The contrast makes the Academy both an exciting destination and a place where their existing concerns become harder to ignore.
Once Robbi enters training, strange experiences complicate her understanding of the stations and their creators. Dreams and an encounter with an unfamiliar creature suggest that the technology has meanings the students have not been taught. The central mystery concerns the Givers themselves: why did they come, and what does their generosity require from humanity? The children occupy an unusual position because the very work that makes them useful also brings them close to things adults may not fully understand.
The continuation follows the shift from preparation to actual station work. Robbi and the other young crew members must maintain the Power Web with assistance from mentally linked robot companions. Practical duties and unanswered questions develop together, so the setting is more than a school surrounded by science-fiction scenery. Keeping the system running matters to people far below them, while learning about its secrets could change how that responsibility looks. The girls' choices take place inside a dependency that already exists.
Begin with the first Laddertop volume and continue with the second part of the graphic story. The tone is a young people's space adventure with an ongoing mystery about trust, technology and responsibility. The visual format follows the characters into a constructed world whose apparent benefits invite difficult questions. Robbi and Azure want to understand their place in it, but that requires discovering whether the future offered by the Academy is really the future they thought they were choosing.
