Author bio

Kyra Davis was born in Santa Clara, California, and grew up in California in a mixed Black and Jewish family, raised mostly by her mother with help from extended family. That sense of living between worlds shows up often in her fiction, especially in the women she writes, women who are smart, restless, funny, and not always sure they fit the part life has handed them.

Before she became a novelist, Davis spent years looking in other directions. As a kid she loved theater, then turned toward fashion and studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Later she returned to school at Golden Gate University, where she earned a degree in business and humanities.

Her early working life was practical. She worked in fashion retail, including Nordstrom, and later supported herself and her son as a marketing manager for a sports club. That mix of style, office politics, money pressure, and plain old day-to-day responsibility helps explain why her books can move so easily between romance, suspense, humor, and real-life stress.

Writing started during a hard stretch, not as some tidy career plan. After her divorce in 2001, Davis was raising a young son, dealing with financial strain, and sleeping badly. She has said that insomnia and anxiety pushed her into making up stories at night, then writing them down. What began as escape slowly became serious work.

That work became Sex, Murder And A Double Latte.

The book introduced Sophie Katz, a San Francisco mystery writer with a big imagination and a habit of walking straight into trouble. Readers who click with Davis often start there, then keep going through Passion, Betrayal And Killer Highlights, Obsession, Deceit, and Really Dark Chocolate, and the later Sophie books because the series blends murder plots with friendship drama, romantic chaos, sharp dialogue, and a lot of nervous energy. The mysteries matter, but so do the people.

Davis did not stay in one lane. So Much For My Happy Ending leans more toward relationship drama and domestic suspense, while Just One Night and Just One Lie move into sexier, more emotionally exposed territory. In Deceptive Innocence, she shifts again, building a revenge story around Bell, a young woman trying to take down a powerful family from the inside. Across those books, Davis keeps returning to questions of power, desire, trust, class, and the stories people tell themselves just to keep going.

Reinvention is one of her favorite subjects.

Another thing readers tend to notice is the dialogue. Davis has said that her background in theater shaped the way she writes conversations, and you can feel that in the quick exchanges, the lively supporting casts, and the way tension often rises through what people say, or refuse to say. Her books usually center women who are clever, impulsive, wounded, or all three at once. She now also writes as Kyra Davis Lurie, and she lives in the Los Angeles area with her husband and family.
