Author bio

Krista Davis is a New York Times bestselling mystery author who makes small towns, friends-and-family drama, and the occasional dead body feel like part of everyday life. From her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia she writes warm, puzzle-focused cozies that invite readers in rather than daring them to keep up.

She has spent much of her life in Virginia, including years in Northern Virginia and a stretch living in Old Town Alexandria. Those brick streets and historic row houses turned into the setting for her Domestic Diva Mysteries, while the nearby mountains helped inspire the pet friendly resort town of Wagtail in the Paws and Claws books. Today she shares her house with a shifting collection of dogs and cats who regularly wander onto the page.

Animals are central to her daily routine. One of her real-life cats, an Ocicat named Mochie, is famous in the household for opening cabinets and leaping to improbable heights. A not-very-golden Golden Retriever and several other opinionated pets treat her writing career as a second job that fits around their needs for walks, dinner, and attention.

Long before she started publishing, mysteries were a constant. As a reader she devoured Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and Agatha Christie, soaking up the pleasures of locked rooms, red herrings, and unexpected but fair endings. That early love of clue-driven stories still shows in the way she plants tiny details for careful readers to find.

Her path to the page was not quick. Davis worked as an assistant manager at a large convention hotel in Washington, DC, spent time selling jewelry on Fifth Avenue, and even went to law school. It took about ten years of writing and revising before she sold her first novel, an experience that left her with a patient, workmanlike attitude toward the business side of books.

That first novel, The Diva Runs Out of Thyme, introduced readers to down to earth entertainer Sophie Winston and the polished perfectionist Natasha Smith. The book was nominated for an Agatha Award for Best First Novel, and later entries such as The Diva Haunts the House and The Diva Digs Up the Dirt would earn additional nominations and bestseller status. The series mixes holiday gatherings, neighborhood squabbles, and detailed recipes with tightly wound whodunits.

Davis followed Sophie from Old Town into the pet centric world of Wagtail with the Paws and Claws Mysteries, beginning with Murder, She Barked. Innkeeper Holly Miller, her Jack Russell terrier Trixie, and calico kitten Twinkletoes solve crimes against a backdrop of dog friendly festivals, Christkindl markets, and gingerbread contests. Recipes for people and pets appear alongside stories that treat animals as full members of the community.

Her third series, the Pen and Ink Mysteries, starts with Color Me Murder and stars Florrie Fox, a Georgetown bookstore manager who also designs intricate coloring books. These stories lean into the pleasures of bookshops, rare volumes, and color-it-yourself covers while still offering classic clue puzzles and a gentle touch of humor.

Away from the keyboard, Davis shares a lot with her heroines. She likes to cook and entertain friends, happily lets someone else worry about deep cleaning, and jokes that her real job titles are canine cuisine chef, door opener, and walking assistant. If the lottery ticket ever comes through, she has said she would celebrate by surrounding herself with an even larger pile of rescued dogs and cats.
