Series background & context

Heather Graham's Krewe of Hunters follows an unusual FBI unit investigating crimes with a possible supernatural connection. Its members combine investigative training with abilities that may let them sense spirits, receive warnings, or perceive something of the past. The dead can supply clues, but they don't make a case simple. Agents still have to determine who is responsible, distinguish appearances from evidence, and protect people who may be the next targets.

The unit's shared gift is also something its members must learn to live with.

The series begins in New Orleans with Phantom Evil. FBI agent Jackson Crow is troubled by the deaths of two teammates, while police officer Angela Hawkins has paranormal intuition of her own. They become involved in the death of a senator's wife, a case that raises competing possibilities: suicide, murder, or something linked to a haunting. Their work together gives the first book both its investigative partnership and its romance. Each must take another person's unusual perceptions seriously without abandoning the need to find an answer they can act on.

Heart of Evil brings the Krewe to Donegal Plantation in Louisiana. A body appears in the same location where the family's patriarch was found dead in the nineteenth century. Ashley Donegal turns to the investigators for help, bringing her into contact with an old romantic connection, agent Jake Mallory. The situation illustrates the series' recurring use of history. A present crime can resemble an earlier one, while a family's memory of the past may help or obstruct the people trying to understand what is happening now.

Later books expand the circle of investigators and locations. In The Unseen, Texas Ranger Logan Raintree agrees to lead paranormal investigators examining killings in San Antonio. U.S. Marshal Kelsey O'Brien can perceive the past, giving them a point of understanding that would be difficult to share with most colleagues. Their inquiry reaches sites associated with the Alamo and the Longhorn. The change of setting brings different legends and historical violence into the same basic task of separating a supernatural clue from a living person's crime.

The books blend paranormal suspense, murder investigation, and romance, often introducing a different central couple. That structure lets Graham explore new partnerships while keeping the larger unit as a continuing connection. Places with remembered violence supply much of the atmosphere, but the emotional focus remains on people trying to trust each other under pressure. Starting with Phantom Evil introduces the Krewe's beginnings; reading onward develops the wider network of agents and the many ways that a place's past can complicate danger in the present.
