In Lady Cop Makes Trouble and Miss Kopp's Midnight Confessions, she deals with fugitives, jailed young women, and the moral policing that trapped so many girls with nowhere to go. Later books such as Kopp Sisters on the March, Dear Miss Kopp, and Miss Kopp Investigates widen the canvas to World War I, wartime service, letters sent across an ocean, and the uneasy adjustments of the postwar years.

The tone is one of the best things about the series.

These are mystery novels, but they are not grim for the sake of it. Stewart keeps the stakes real while leaving room for dry humor, odd newspaper details, and the everyday friction between sisters who know each other too well. Because the books are based on real people and real events, there is a nice sense that history keeps bumping into fiction in surprising ways.
