The Koko / EBK books revolve around Koko P. Martstellar, an ex-corporate mercenary who would prefer a stiff drink and a manageable problem, but never gets either. When Koko Takes a Holiday opens, she is running a brothel on the Sixty Islands, a manufactured tropical resort built on sex, spectacle, and money. Then an old ally, Portia Delacompte, decides Koko needs to die, and the series takes off running.

Quiet is not really an option here.

From there, the books move through escapes, bargains, betrayals, and last-minute alliances. Koko is tough, funny, impatient, and clear-eyed about violence. She can shoot, bluff, improvise, and read a room fast, but the series works because she is never floating above the danger. Every win costs her something, every refuge turns temporary, and every new job seems to come with a fresh set of people who want to use her or kill her.

Jedidiah Flynn becomes a major part of the story early on. He is a former security officer, wounded, depressed, and often just trying to keep pace with the storm that is Koko. Their partnership gives the books some real feeling under all the bullets and wreckage. Portia Delacompte, meanwhile, hangs over the series as both personal enemy and reminder that the larger system Koko escaped is still reaching for her.

The setting matters a lot. These novels take place roughly five hundred years in the future, but they do not read like clean, shiny space opera. Shea's world is grubby, commercial, loud, and half-broken, full of resort islands, floating barges, outlander compounds, industrial bosses, bounty agents, mutants, and authoritarian schemers. The science fiction backdrop is fun, but the real pressure comes from very human things: greed, revenge, survival, bad management, worse politics, and the constant need to stay one step ahead.

The tone is wild, but it is not random.

Shea mixes cyberpunk, pulp adventure, black comedy, and satire, especially when the target is corporate greed or social rot. Koko the Mighty pushes Koko and Flynn into a dangerous refuge that may not be as safe as it looks, while Koko Uncaged widens the frame again as Koko takes bodyguard work and gets dragged into bigger power games. The books do not reset neatly from one installment to the next, so reading in order helps. Relationships, grudges, and fallout carry forward. If you want fast, bloody, funny science fiction with a heroine who solves impossible problems through nerve, skill, and sheer refusal to quit, this series delivers.
