Kindred of the Sea is an earlier C.J. Adrien series that starts close to the first shock of Viking raids in western France. In The Line of His People, a boy named Abriel survives the sack of a monastery tied to Saint Philbert. Years later, raised among monks, he is sent back to recover the lost relics from the ruined island. What begins as a religious mission turns into something much larger, because the Northmen now hold the ground and the past refuses to stay buried.

Abriel is caught between two worlds.

That is what gives the series its pull. Abriel comes out of a Christian monastic world, but his journey forces him into close contact with the Norse settlers and warriors who changed his life. The books are set along coasts, islands, and sea routes where trade, faith, and violence all meet. Salt marshes, monasteries, village defenses, and island politics are not just background detail here. They shape who has power, who feels safe, and who gets to decide what home means.

Across the series, Abriel grows from orphaned survivor into Abriel Haraldsson, a man with responsibilities that reach far beyond his own past. By The Oath of the Father, he is recovering from combat while monks hide him away and fake his death. Back on the island of Herius, Queen Kenna is left exposed to northern suitors who want her, her kingdom, or both. The warlord Turgeis enters that struggle as a direct threat, turning Abriel's fight to return home into a chase story with real political bite.

The stakes get personal fast.

Along the way, Adrien mixes action with questions of loyalty, belief, and belonging. Supporting figures like Kenna, Asa, and the seer Oddr help give the series a family and community dimension that sets it apart from a straightforward raid-and-revenge tale. There are battles and escapes, but there is also a steady interest in how people build trust across cultural lines, and how fragile that trust can be when power enters the room.

The tone is adventurous and serious, but generally more accessible than Adrien's later Hasting books. If you want Viking historical fiction with a younger viewpoint, a strong sense of place, and a story shaped by relics, kinship, and island survival, Kindred of the Sea is a good place to start. It is part quest story, part political struggle, and part search for identity.
