Series background & context

The Killer Instincts series is where Elle Kennedy lets her romantic suspense side go big. These books follow a loose but fiercely loyal network of mercenaries, assassins, spies, and soldiers for hire, many of them connected to Jim Morgan and his elite black-ops team. The action moves across borders, the danger is constant, and nobody in these stories gets to stay comfortable for long.

The series opens with Midnight Rescue, which introduces Abby Sinclair, a deadly operative with a brutal past, and Kane Woodland, the mercenary sent in to back her up when a mission spirals out of control. From there, Kennedy keeps widening the canvas. Luke Dubois, Olivia Taylor, Isabel Roma, Trevor Callaghan, Ethan Hayes, Bailey Jones, Sean Reilly, Derek Pratt, Cate, Ash, and many others all get pulled into the orbit of the team.

Nobody here has a simple job.

That is part of the fun. One book might involve mob ties in Manhattan, another a master thief in snowy Europe, another a cartel war, another a revenge mission that drags old heartbreak back into the open. The cast is large, but Kennedy gives each couple a distinct emotional shape, so the books do not blur together. Some lean into second chances, some into forced proximity, some into enemies-to-lovers tension, and some into the wear and tear of loving someone whose life is built around violence and secrecy.

The tone is darker than her college romances, but it is still recognizably her work. There is sexual tension, fast dialogue, and a strong focus on team dynamics. These operatives tease each other, protect each other, and carry one another's histories. That found-family thread is what holds the whole series together.

Because the supporting cast keeps returning, this is one series where reading in order really helps. Relationships deepen across books, side characters grow into leads, and old missions cast long shadows.

If you want Kennedy at her most action-heavy, this is the place to go. Killer Instincts gives you danger, competent people under pressure, and romances that have to fight hard to survive the world around them.
